What the CDC has to say on work-related musculoskeletal disorders and ergonomics.

Highlights

  • Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are correlated with higher costs to employers.

  • On average, MSDs resulted in 8 days away from work compared to 6 days for non-fatal illnesses/injuries.

  • Work practices and policy changes can be used instead of or supplement engineering controls (equipment, physical layout, etc.)

Notable Stories

  • Erie Insurance Group established an ergonomics program and hired a physical therapist consultant. Interventions led to a “dramatic reduction in lost work days and 50% reduction in workers compensation claims.”

  • Duracell formed an ergonomics committee which implemented improvements in loading/unloading of materials, redesign of work stations, job rotations, floor mat changes, and early reporting of symptoms. “Cumulative trauma disorders” incident rates were reduced by 90% and total accident rate was decreased by 81%.
